When choosing window treatments, it's best to first determine your needs and wants. Do you need light, sun or wind protection? Are you in need of more privacy or are you simply covering an ugly window? Is the treatment intended to enhance the existing style and aesthetic of the room? Perhaps your goal is to make a window look bigger than it actually is.

Once your needs are determined, you must then choose a style that works for you. Keep in mind that not all styles work well on all windows or with all types of fabric. For example, if you want sun protection, sheer fabric will not be suitable. Similarly, a heavier upholstery weight fabric, though suitable for a shaped upholstered valance, will not hang well if used for drapes that puddle.
